One of my go-to mantras as a leader and coach is simple but mighty: “Name it, to tame it.” When left unspoken, conflict, confusion, or discomfort can fester beneath the surface fueling resentment, misalignment, and unproductive rumination. Whether you're managing a team, collaborating with peers, or navigating a tough conversation, naming the tension out loud (with care) can shift the energy, create clarity, and unlock forward movement.

It’s not about confrontation, it’s about communication. When we avoid naming what’s real, we miss the chance to resolve, rebuild, and re-engage. As leaders, our job isn’t to pretend the tension doesn’t exist. Our job is to create space for truth-telling, perspective-sharing, and trust-building.

So how can you start practicing “Name it, to tame it” in your day-to-day leadership? Start here:

Five Ways to Practice “Name It to Tame It”

  1. Notice the Signal: Pay attention to discomfort, silence, or avoidance. They’re often signs that something needs to be addressed.

  2. Lead with Curiosity: Instead of blaming, ask: “Can we pause? I feel some tension here, how are you experiencing this? Curiosity invites dialogue, not defensiveness.

  3. Use Neutral Language: Frame the issue without judgment. Say what you observed or felt, not what you assume someone intended.

  4. Stay in the Now: Focus on what’s happening in the current moment. Don’t pile on old history—stick to the present to keep things productive.

  5. Close the Loop: After you’ve named it and addressed it, follow up. Confirm clarity, express appreciation, and reinforce trust.
